10 thoughts on...Maleficent

  1. This has been a film that I've been anxiously anticipating this for some time and am relieved to say that this is neither an insult to the original film nor an empty cash-cow like Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
  2. Why does Sam Riley have an Irish accent?
  3. Disney continue to show audiences that true love doesn't have to be romantic, and this is a moving moment that isn't played for emotion in the way you may expect from a newbie director.
  4. Imelda Staunton can do no wrong. She's ably helped by Lesley Manville and Juno Temple.
  5. Although my reaction is generally very positive, this still pales in comparison to Sleeping Beauty. And sadly there isn't enough villainy for it to be celebrated in the same way as, say, Disney's Hocus Pocus.
  6. Angela Jolie is key to the film's success. Even though she isn't the villain most audiences will want her to be, she conveys an emotional weight that allows the clunky storyline to feel somewhat authentic. Without her this film would have suffered greatly.
  7. It's great to see a female anti-hero in a leading summer blockbuster.
  8. The most disappointing element to the film is the music. What were they thinking? Surely this should have been one of the more important elements to focus on in a Disney film?
  9. Elle Fanning had so little to do. She deserves more opportunities, she's so good in Ginger & Rosa.
  10. When will Disney stop rehashing their back catalogue?
