It is usual for me to be sad about the death of a filmmaker that I have admired or whose work has touched me, but I am deeply saddened by the news of Robin Williams' death. No doubt this is because of his strong presence in my childhood, particularly with Mrs. Doubtfire which dealt with divorce in an accessible way that eased the process for any child going through that experience themselves. And then there was The Birdcage, one of the first representations of homosexual characters that showcased genuine love. His presence was always a joy, even in a film such as The Big Wedding. And he was an incredibly talented actor. A sad loss.
