My favourite shot of...the TV teaser trailer for Les Miserables

I know that Anne Hathaway has been the one getting all of the attention as the release of Les Miserables draws closer - and with a planned concert showcasing her musical talents it seems that this increase will only continue - but I'm sure it'll be Samantha Barks who'll steal audiences' hearts as Eponine. This image is likely a shot from their rendition of 'In My Life/A Heart Full of Love' and I'm starting to believe that Tom Hooper & co will do the material justice. As the trailer suggests, I'm hoping this is the film event of the year (unfortunately 2013 as I'm based in the UK).

And the nominees are...the 85th Academy Awards

We've got 108 days until the nominees are announced and the race has most definitely started with the success of Argo and Silver Linings Playbook at Toronto, as well as The Master's impressive box-office figures. Also, since my first predictions, we've lost two contenders (Gravity and The Great Gatsby) to next year's race. So here I go again, stabbing in the dark...

Hyde Park on Hudson
Life of Pi
The Master

5 wishes for...the Primetime Emmy Awards 2012

  1. Julianne Moore wins Best Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for Game Change.
  2. Parks and Recreation is announced as a last minute nominee for the Outstanding Comedy Series award. And it wins. At least Amy Poehler wins Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
  3. Kathryn Joosten is remembered and celebrated (with a Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series?). She was wonderful in The West Wing.
  4. Downton Abbey is given the Outstanding Drama Series award. And Joanne Froggatt wins Supporting Actress in Drama Series.
  5. Nicole Kidman is given the opportunity to sing along to some kind of performance and enjoy herself as she does at the Grammy Awards.

10 thoughts on...Anna Karenina

  1. It is a thrilling idea to place this story, where the characters' desires are confronted by the etiquette of society, in the world of a theatre. When the narrative and context are combined it creates a cinematic language that is thrilling, fresh and captivating. This is especially true of the dance sequence and horse racing scene, both of which showcase cinema at its most magical.
  2. Unfortunately there are too many moments where the theatre takes a backseat and the narrative comes to the fore, feeling almost trite in comparison to the heightened reality of the film as a whole.
  3. This is an ensemble piece and there's an incredibly talented cast. Matthew Macfayden, Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander were particularly good. It'll be exciting to watch the trajectory of the latter two as they're starting their careers.
  4. Joe Wright is in love with his tracking shots, and they're glorious here. And a bit more appropriate than his famous Dunkirk sequence in Atonement.
  5. Keira Knightley is talented but this seems like a thankless role, one where she repeats previous successes without any room for adventure. It is hard to deny that Wright has discovered what works and utilises it effectively.
  6. The costumes and production design are beautiful, and destined for Oscar recognition...
  7. ...speaking of which, I doubt that this film will have a big impact with at next years Oscars. It's an untraditional adaptation with an unlikable protagonist.
  8. Dario Marianelli's music is beautiful. I think he may be the best contemporary film composer.
  9. I'm intrigued to watch Wright's career, I wasn't a fan of Hanna and am torn in my reaction to his work here - but he is definitely a visual and exciting filmmaker.
  10. I love Powell and Pressburger.

An image to treasure.

Despite contrary claims from everyone involved over the past few weeks and months, the follow-up to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset has indeed been filmed and we can expected it sometime next year. I can't wait.

10 thoughts on...the trailer for the third series of Downton Abbey

1. I still can't believe Shirley MacLaine has joined the cast.
2. Penelope Wilton will hopefully/presumably be given more to do now that Maggie Smith's Dowager has a new character to constantly quarrel with.
 3. I hope that we'll be able to rejoice that Edith has finally found a relationship, even if it doesn't seem to involve much love.
4. Anna seems to be doing a lot of running/fretting as Mr Bates fights for freedom. I like both characters but I really do wish that this storyline would end soon.
5. Where is O'Brien?
6. Should we presume that Ethel has turned to prostitution with that make-up?
7. The embrace between Mrs. Patmore and Mrs. Hughes is unexpected and rather uncomfortable to watch.
8. I know that one of my favourite aspects of this upcoming series will be Sybil and Branson's relationship and their interactions with the rest of Downton.
9. Mary better stop looking at herself in a mirror.
10. Having popular songs sung by a chorus of children scares me.
