10 moments to cherish...cinema 2012

  1. Weird Girl from Frankenweenie, easily the best Tim Burton character in too long. Please let this be a sign that he's back to his old form!
  2. Kylie Minogue giving an impressive performance in Holy Motors. Who would have thought that she would have found herself with such a significant role in one of the years most celebrated arthouse films?
  3. This year I was properly introduced to the dashing Tom Hiddleston through discovering past work (The Deep Blue Sea, Return to Cranford and Thor) and new work (The Avengers, The Hollow Crown, War Horse). His winning smile, talent and presence make him one of the most attractive new actors in film. I can't wait to see more of him.
  4. The dreamlike world of Beasts of the Southern Wild where memories, dreams and reality forge into a beautifully poetic narrative through the eyes of its child protagonist, Hushpuppy. This is beautifully achieved by Benh Zeitlin.
  5. The performances in Les Miserables. This is a film unashamed to be an epic melodrama and it is the cast who bring the emotion (Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway), the fun (Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen) and the passion (Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne) to the big screen.
  6. Judi Dench being the leading lady to two box-office hits, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Skyfall. I hope producers take note and make a spin-off of the later based on the relationship between Helen McCrory and Dench,
  7. I wasn't a fan of Anna Karenina but the dance sequence is as beautiful, exciting and electrifying as any other of this year in film. Which makes it all the more disappointing that the film was so poor.
  8. Pixar making a film about the relationship between a mother and daughter in Brave. The film isn't without its flaws but it remains a wonderful combination of the maturity of Pixar with the fairytale magic of Disney whilst presenting a conflict that is rare within family entertainment. The mother is not the villain, she is as sympathetic as the young protagonist and their relationship is one that requires them both to improve.
  9. Charlize Theron embracing her nasty character in Young Adult. She must be one of the most hideous leading characters in film!
  10. Life's A Happy Song.
