10 thoughts on...Before Midnight

*Spoilers alert*
  1. Is it just me or do Jesse's books sound trashy?
  2. Despite being quite an ugly representation of committed love, this remains a romantic and positive example of a relationship. Even if I would wish less conflict on any relationship I would partake in.
  3. I do love this trilogy's interest in the shoes of the characters. It is so revealing, and charmingly playful at the beginning of this film where Hank (Jesse's son) is wearing Converse as Jesse did himself in Before Sunrise.
  4. These films are incredibly focused on the divide between the genders. Personally (being a gay man living in London) this divide is less evident than it is to the characters within this film, and it's almost a shame that there is no representation of anything other than the traditional male / female characters. This is my only (and minor!) quibble.
  5. I knew Jesse missed that plane!
  6. That scene in the hotel room after Hank calls Celine is incredibly frustrating, draining and heart-aching. Fittingly. I've no doubt that this will linger in my mind. It's an incredible moment.
  7. Celine / Julie Deply is the mayor of crazytown. And Jesse / Ethan Hawke has the patience of a saint.
  8. It is incredibly rare that each film in a trilogy will be as rich and rewarding as this one. The only one that springs to mind is the Toy Story set. Both examples seem to absorb the ideas of their predecessor and evolve into something that explores the concept to a greater degree, in a more mature way that reflects the (presumable) growth of the audience of the original film(s). It's astonishing and all filmmakers attempting to replicate these successes should take note!
  9. That letter. Wow.
  10. This is the end, right? I think if those two can survive that conflict then they will be able to survive anything. The minor details of where they will locate, how they succeed at being parents, etc. will not effect the main thread of the series' narrative - their relationship. They are together. And nothing, not even Celine, can prevent that.

An irresistible statement.

"If there's any kind of magic in this world it must be in the attempt of understanding someone, sharing something."
