10 thoughts on...The Heat

  1. Sandra Bullock's face is starting to look like it's had work done. That is never a good thing.
  2. This is a terrific slice of American popular entertainment that pushes female characters to the fore. That's a rare thing.
  3. Paul Feig is intriguing. He was the unsung member of Bridesmaids and he's done an even better job with the comedy here (although that did feel more ambitious than this film in terms of narrative).
  4. I like the film's playfulness with stereotypes. Isn't it refreshing for an American movie to not take itself too seriously?
  5. Melissa McCarthy is a wonderful screen presence, but will her routine of impulsive yet endearing chubby female get boring quickly?
  6. I will never forget that choking/pancake scene. A great combination of comedy, story and character.
  7. Buddy films are never going to tire.
  8. I'd be very disappointed if a sequel was announced. This is a film that definitely does not need a sequel and I don't want it tainted by a bad one (like Bullock's Miss Congeniality).
  9. I can't wait to watch this again. With a beer.
  10. I love Sandra Bullock.

"All my buddies..."

"That is one thing that I can't shake loose...all my buddies faces are still young. And the thing is, the more year I have, the more they've ost. And it's not always buddies faces that I see, sometimes they're German faces. Near the end we were shootin' moon-faced boys. I was a sniper. Where I grew up, you learned how to shoot to hunt food. They'd post me up front. Darn near ahead of the lines. And I'd sit...forever. It's an amazing thing what you can see while you're sittin'. I'd look for the officers, the radio guys or artillery spotter. Sometimes I'd spot a gun nest by the smoke and I'd fire into it. Sometimes it was just a movement in the woods. We had a scout, a little fella, name of Katz. He was a Polish boy from Milwaukee. He'd always take recon and he saved our skin many a time. He was a little fella. We'd broken out of the hedgerows...we were makin' a run across the open and we come upon a woods. We started drawin' fire. I took my usual position and I saw somethin' movin', real slow like. I waited ten minutes, it moved again and I shot. The movement stopped. The next day we found Katz...head shot. He'd been workin' his way back toward our lines. Everyone in the unit thought a german sniper had taken him...everyone, all these years. Everyone, but me."

10 thoughts on...Only God Forgives

  1. Kristin Scott Thomas is given a completely new type of character and, unsurpsingly, she excels as the foul mouthed, bitter mother looking for revenge.
  2. Ryan Gosling is beautiful.
  3. I'm really not sure if I have an opinion on this film as a whole. I was hypnotised, entertained, horrified, embarrassed, intrigued, bored and bewildered regularly throughout the film. But I didn't dislike it.
  4. There is too much violence. Perhaps.
  5. Drive is such an exceptional film.
  6. Tom Burke is an interesting actor, and his face looks terrific on screen. Does he have a big career ahead of him?
  7. I can't wait to watch Nicolas Winding Refn continue to make these films. I'll expect nothing less than thrilling, even if it's not perfect.
  8. The soundtrack is terrific.
  9. Kristin Scott Thomas' hair is hideous.
  10. Wanna fight?
