10 thoughts on...Captain Phillips

  1. Paul Greengrass is an exceptional filmmaker and this is an accomplished piece - a simple yet layered story that cannot help engaging the audience in this horrifying incident.
  2. Somali pirates are a frightening bunch of people, even with their (mostly) three dimensional characterisations here.
  3. This may be Tom Hanks' best performance. And that is saying something.
  4. Isn't it refreshing this is doing so well at the American box-office? And alongside Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity too.
  5. Why does the film need to root Phillips' determination to survive with his family? This feels rather too simple and sentimental for a film that is otherwise complex.
  6. This is going to be a big Oscar nominee with Picture, Director, Screenplay and Editing a certainty, right? With this creative team, its financial success and the fact it is a solid movie it would be a stupid to bet against it.
  7. 2013 has been a fantastic year for cinema.
  8. This may be even more intense than Zero Dark Thirty. And equally overwhelming. This is the type of true-life storytelling I like to see rather than Diana (which, admittedly, I haven't seen and probably will never see).
  9. The sound work here is incredible and key to the film.
  10. Will this launch Greengrass's career in a big way?

Essential cinema.

It's rare that a film feels as if it has a true meditation on what matters in life without the typical cry from American film that family and marriage are what is key. This is a film that celebrates things that are often mistaken as frivolous. And shines a glorious light on a life that often would be condemned or criticised. This is wonderful.
